Multilingual Sites and Blogs: the future is in machine translation

As a stand-alone application developer, and especially as a web developer, I often face the problem of locating and supporting multiple "languages". The majority of desktop applications have a major advantage compared to a website and a blog in particular. There are now many applications, including free and / or open-source, easily support multiple languages, including those completely indecipherable, such as Chinese, Cyrillic, etc ... All this shows the presence of software tools, ready, able to offer an environment specializing in the management of different languages. The same operating systems, in fact, from Windows to MacOS, arriving on our desks provided with good support for localization, which is not reduced to mere replacement is of the "characters", but it also works on the direction of writing (see Arabic or Chinese - to right to left or vertically). The operating systems are able to provide that minimum of layer Kernel on which then are laid the various tools present in the market.

Desktop Applications

The situation of Desktop applications and very different from the Web, as we shall see later. The applications that we install on our computer, in fact, enjoy a host of privileges absent in a setting "open" as it's the Internet:

Google Maps component for Flash

AFComponents UMAP

Google has APIs - in Javascript - to put its maps into any web site . Viediamo how to accomplish the same thing with Flash!

image We start from a free component, UMAP (Universal ActionScript 3.0 Mapping API - Integrated with Google Maps), developed by AFComponents , a vertically organized companies of components for Flash / Flex really interesting and affordable. On the site, where you must register to take advantage of free downloads, there are also versions of UMAP for ActionScript 2.0: MAP G Ver.2.6.1 . In this case we will analyze the version 0.4 beta of UMAP for ActionScript 3.0 (inside the package there is also a Flex component). That we're going to see is - obviously - a beta version and is missing, then, some features present in the version for Actionscript 2.0 ( G Ver.2.6.1 MAP ). However, property run impeccably to the future, it seems more interesting to focus attention on this release, I tried them both and, despite the greater completeness of the release for Actionscript 2.0, Actionscript 3.0 beta version is considerably more powerful.

Tunneling and proxy servers, and not only for Ajax

Because of its ability to communicate with the server, the object XmlHttpRequest (XHR), used in the technology Ajax (which stands for Asynchronous JavaScript and XML, which should be pronounced "egiacs" even if we Italians prefer "aiacs"), has a security lock that prevents you from running applications outside the domain in which it operates. This protection is necessary to prevent Javascript Injection (techniques of "injection" extremely dangerous code in order to break the system) of various kinds, with the ultimate objective of "break" in the system.
This limit is now taken into serious consideration and you're thinking, somehow, to solve it - XmlHttpRequest object directly - without compromising security (see also: Third Proposal for cross-site extensions to XMLHttpRequest ).

However, the situation today is as follows:

Reinvigorate Snoop

After the release of the new Google Analytics, I'm enjoying in spite of some critical views online, even Reinvigorate offers some interesting updates. The first concerns the ability to "invite" other "friends" in order to share the maintenance and statistics for a site. Through the 'Access Manager, in practice, you can expand access to other users and configures privileges and options.

The other innovation is Snoop, client application available for both Windows and Mac. The stated goal is: "Snoop streams website and blog events to you live, in real-time", in other words there is no need to connect with a browser to verify access, Snoop will be to inform in real time about what is happening on our site. To use it, of course, must have an account Reinvigorate enabled and have configured our site or Blog in order to track entries.

Running in the System Tray (Windows) / System Status Bar (Mac) you no longer? Need to endlessly flip Between work and your stats. When something happens, Snoop will let you know.

Snoop is positioned in the trayicon and acoustic signals a new access to the website or Blog. It is meant mainly for Blogger and responds to specific events such as: "Purchase / Donation ',' New User 'and' Comment / Post '!

Original idea in the context of statistics and Web access, apart from the analysis tools such as WebTrends , for example, have always been confined to the Web We will see the evolution!

Google Analytics: new version

Google Analytics

We are pleased to announce the new redesigned version of Google Analytics.
In the coming weeks, will migrate all existing Analytics accounts to the new Google Analytics interface. You will be notified via email once the migration of your account. For a month, you can access both the original and the new interface. During the migration, there is no interruption of service and be able to view all your data regardless of the interface used.

Google Analytics

For those already registered can access a preview of the new features really interesting. It was a bit 'that Google did not update its system of statistics and the competitors they had definitely benefited (see: Reinvigorate: measure. analyze. evolves. ). Among the most interesting, at least for me, I point out:

Custom message boards
You no longer need to go to find information in the reports. Enter all the information you need on a custom board to send to others via email.

Reports via email
Schedule or send report "ad hoc" via email that contain exactly the information you want to share.

For now only a few accounts have been migrated, my - for example - no! As indicated in the note, in fact, Google will notify users by email for a month so that you can evaluate the new version will have access to the former - probably not to get lost and to compare the two systems! As soon as I can prove will post my impressions ... ;)

Reflecting on Joost, Apollo and Browsers

Why go to Apollo to display HTML and dynamic content when a browser already allows it? Why use Joost Net TV to see if a browser already allows it?

Because the producer browser does not have added two simple functions within them:

  • Windowless windows
  • P2P Object

Windowless windows

This simple feature would make the most of the HTTP connection and make it really useful browsers. To open windows (pop-up in practice) with only the title and without edges, if anything, in transparency, increase the production of widgets to be exploited with the normal browser, like what is now Apollo . With a careful study on the safety (as I think now is the only reason for this limit) would open up very interesting scenarios.

P2P Object

As we all know by now all browsers supportono the object XMLHttpRequest , which has given rise to an endless amount of so-called Ajax applications. This object, usable through Javascript, is able to provide a HTTP channel - parallel - manageable by using client script, both for the ìinvio that for data reception.
Sooner or later, as anticipated in various other blog, Adobe will insert a P2P in Flash. Why not do the same thing in the browser? An object of this type combined with Windowless features allow you to create applications like Joost-without installing anything on your machine, ensuring cross-compatibility worthy of the Internet, thereby increasing the efficiency of production (now Joost is developed for each system operational, which is very heavy - both in money and time - in fact, the beta will follow ...).

In short windows with RSS FEED text, audio and video to be placed where we want on our desktops, in true W3C standards. Opening is TCP channels directly from Javascript, with the possibility of data exchange boundless. Clearly the intention is small and the "crime" is high, hackers, spam and phishing are lurking and moves of this kind terrorize a bit 'all ...

Accessibility and Usability: unobtrusive Javascript

Allowing users to interact with a Web page in recent years has produced a significant increase in the use of client-side scripting: Javascript code can respond in real time and manipulate a variety of information. The Web2.0 is the ultimate expression of this capacity for interaction, in which the end user - the user-to participate actively in the construction and 'evolution of the Web site, interacting with it and helping yourself. Is referred to as User-Generated Content (or UGC - user generated content) that sees the "navigator" definitely not passive!

To achieve this interaction, thus allowing the end user to add his contribution, we developed a series of techniques that have changed the appearance and behavior of Web pages (static until now, but now similar to the traditional applications of Desktop) in recent years. Change the content of a page, send files, giving their vote to a video or a document, register or change their personal data, are just some of the adaptions operations in many services (2.0 beta) on the Web

Vocal Fruits

The service XFruits , I use this blog for the PDF version , Has added a new and interesting tool: VocalFruit .
Now our rss feed can be heard.
The new service is available to registered users with an initial credit of 100 vocals. In fact I had to reregister, little mystery, but I tried it and it works really well.
Probably the choice of credits depends on the cost of the technology used for the speaker, so I assume that may soon be in charge ! Information on the site are still relatively few, actually, but the idea seems interesting.

For now there are the languages English, French and Spanish, Italian for I fear you will have to wait a bit '(the limit they never will, as often happens). The service features allow you to use speech output generated from the rss feed, or on our Web site, cell phone or an MP3 player.
