Photoshop tutorial: effects with shadows

In this tutorial I will show you some special effects that can be applied to a simple rectangular object playing with shadows. Obviously I am not referring shadow effect applied on a layer, but to real shadows done manually. First of all, draw a rectangle on a layer like this:

Rettangolo

The effects that can be created are varied and variants are all based on the same procedure, leaving plenty of room for imagination. Here are some examples:

Effeti ombra

All these effects have in common the extreme simplicity of their implementation. To achieve them, in fact, just add a layer under our rectangle, which will be the shadow layer. On this picture will track (black) identical to the original rectangle. To do this we can proceed in various ways, depending upon the complexity of the main form. In our case it is possible to select the edges of the rectangle by clicking on the layer by holding down the Command key (Control on a PC). Awarded the selection click on the shadow layer and fill it black color:

  • Right-click on the selection and click Fill
  • Command + Cancel (ALT + Cancel on PC) if you have set the black color as the background color

At this point we apply a Blur effect to the layer shadow: the Filters menu select Blur> Gaussian Blur ... and enter a value of 3/4 depending on your taste. Now resize the shadow (with the blur that will be visible under our rectangle) of a 90%. The fact remains that this does not decide the type of shadow effect to apply. You can in fact distort the layer with the appropriate function in the Edit menu:

Altera immagine

At this point your imagination will determine the final result. If you do not want to manually Altering the shadow you can take advantage of some of the distortions in the default menu link at the top right:

Arcata

Selecting Arcata, for example, you can adjust the deformation and re-create the ultimate effect shown in the examples above. Then playing with transparency and symmetry can be obtained:

Trasparenza e simmetria
