Photoshop tutorial: effects with shadows

In this tutorial I will show you some special effects that can be applied to a simple rectangular object by playing with the shadows. Obviously I do not mean shadow effect applied on a layer, but real shadows created manually. First draw a rectangle on a layer like this:

Rettangolo

The effects that can occur are varied and the variations are all based on the same process, leaving plenty of room for imagination. Here are some examples:

Effeti ombra

All these effects have in common the extreme simplicity of their implementation. To achieve them, in fact, just add a layer under our rectangle, which will be the shadow layer. On this track image (black) identical to the original rectangle. To do this you can proceed in various ways, depending on the complexity of the main form. In our case you can select the edges of the rectangle by clicking on the layer while holding down the Command key (Control on PC). Obtained selection click on the shadow layer and fill the color black:

  • Right click on the selection and click Fill
  • Command + Cancel (Alt + Cancel your PC) if you set the color black as background color

At this point we apply a Blur effect to the layer shadow from the Filters menu select Blur> Gaussian Blur ... and enter a value of 3 / 4 according to taste. Now resize the shadow (that with the blurring will be visible under our rectangle) of 90%. Without this all that remains is to decide the type of shadow effect to apply. You can in fact distort the layer with the appropriate function in the Edit menu:

Altera immagine

At this point your imagination will determine the final result. If you do not want to alter the shade you can manually use some of the distortions in the default menu that found in the upper right corner:

Arcata

Selecting Arcata, for example, you can adjust the deformation and re-create the final effect shown in the examples above. Then playing with transparency and symmetries can be obtained:

Trasparenza e simmetria
