Adobe AIR applications have the advantage of being relatively small in file size with separate installation of Adobe AIR 1.0 runtime libraries . This advantage, however, can become a real problem when you are preparing to deploy an Adobe AIR, is on the network (ie the browser) and a rigid support such as a CD / DVD.
Furthermore, consider those users accustomed to install applications in the traditional way. The Adobe AIR runtime, in fact, must be installed separately by the user before installing any Adobe AIR application. This procedure, although it must be done only once, is the responsibility of the end user who may not be entirely practical in dealing with such situations. Adobe, of course, became aware of this obstacle and proposed in the Adobe Labs a little artifice (a package consisting of a mixture Javascript / Flash / AIR) that installs the Adobe AIR runtime (if any) before downloading a Adobe AIR application. At Adobe Labs, you can download AIR Badge , a fairly easy package for developers of Adobe AIR application.
The package includes a sample HTML page with a test. Its use is very simple. There are all the source code so as to personalize messages and behaviors. This solution solves the problem installing AIR application from a browser, cross-browsing is ensuring that the cross-platform (it is a good solution for both Windows, Mac or Linuz), guiding the end user at all stages of installation .
However there are still some limitations in the current version of Adobe AIR! Limitations related to the fact its distribution of rigid media such as CD or DVD. To resolve them are already some interesting solutions such as SHU . This product aims to address some limitations of Adobe AIR and is really interesting. Currently, Adobe AIR has the following limits:
- Adobe AIR applications must be installed in the system to run
- You need to install the runtime (as mentioned above) before you can install or run an Adobe AIR
- AIR applications can not be run directly from CD / DVD
- AIR applications can not open Word files or PDF
- We can not run other applications
- Exclusive access to only internal SQLite database
