Photoshop tutorial: folded paper effect

image Adobe Photoshop is a powerful tool and allows you to create truly captivating effects. To achieve the effect of bending of a sheet of paper, in fact, we can use the transform tool to "bend" - really - a layer. With a few small steps can make the effect very realistic. The images presented below in this tutorial are examples and are made in low resolution. To improve the effect of using a high resolution, so you want to resize the image to the end and get an anti-aliasing on the edges.

STEP 1

Create a new document and add a layer, our sheet of paper - I made a red square:

image

STEP 2

Press Ctrl-T to activate the free transform. Click on the button image or, from the Edit menu, choose Transform / Warp.

imageimage

At this point, click and drag a corner to the center:

imageimage

This is the basis. However, the effect is only partial. We can improve it by adding a few details.

STEP 3

We make our paper more complete. Draw something inside, even a simple border, on the same layer and repeat step 2.

imageimage

As you can see only the edge is not affected but the whole figure of the layer. Also, if you try to overdo it, im dragging mouse during the alteration to the center of the sheet:

imageimage

you can actually see the "back" of our layers. In fact, the layer is not treated as three-dimensional element. In fact there is no "back" of our paper. Photoshop "copy" the front making it appear "retro." We can use this property to our advantage. Then apply a gradient to the edge we want to fold, only a portion of it and try a gradient from black to transparent:

imageimage

We have already improved the situation!

STEP 4

We can still improve the result. This time we use a gradient from black to white, impostanto the opacity to 50%:

image

imageimage

Unìinteressante variation during the alteration, is to use a portion of the layer, as we did for the gradient, and act on distorting the controls:

imageimage

Getting the first or second imagines alter depending on how:

imageimage

In the second image I have reversed the gradient. This, in fact, decide the origin of the "light" and then 3-D effect.

STEP 5

The bending can be made even softer by acting on the edge of the alteration, adding a more realistic curvature:

imageimage

The addition of a small shadow, then, makes it more realistic. To add a shadow with the magic wand select the folded corner. Add a new layer and fill it with black, applying a filter gradient.

imageimage

Now back on the paper layer, reselect the corner with the magic wand, select the new layer you just created that contains our shadow and press Ctrl + Alt + I to invert the selection:

imageimage

click on Add Layer Mask image . So as to obtain:

imageimage

To move the shadow click on the chain image between the layer and the shadow mask. Select the layer on the left, the shadow, and move. Also applied an opacity of 50%.

I stopped at the first step!
I can not find the menu command 'Edit selected Transform / Warp "... .. but where is it?

@ Simon: I could not send the mail, he returns error, so I answer here. The command is available from the altered version of Photoshop CS2.
In CS3 you must proceed as follows:

    1) Select the layer you want to "bend" or alter

    2) From the "Edit" menu (if English Edit) Vai on "Transform", which contains a submenu, where you will find the "Warp"

When you select a portion of a layer and the "Transform" - such as stairs - on the toolbar at the top you can also find the icon to switch to the mode of alteration.

great tutorial! P I'm using CS4 and when the roll angle towards the inside of the rectangle, the back is not the copy of the front, but it is transparent. how can I get the effect of the tutorial?
thanks and congratulations for the site and the tutorials!

  14. July 8, 2009 Giovambattista Fazioli :

    @ RP:

the back is not the copy of the front, but it is transparent.

Photoshop CS4 also does not change the effect. Perhaps the problem lies in how you created the shape you're bending. This should fit on a single layer. The operation of "bending" in fact, acts on a single layer. Try to blend the layers into one layer and work. I think the problem is that ...

  15. July 8, 2009 RP:

    @ Giovambattista Fazioli:

thank you! now copy back. But the difficulty I find is to understand the nuance of what form do well to come to the fold. I'm playing around a bit ...
    thanks again for your feedback!

SORRY BUT YOU CAN DO THE SAME PROCESS WITH A PICTURE??

  17. January 10, 2011 Giovambattista Fazioli :

@ Emanuela: I would say yes ... test!? The important thing is that the "photo" is a single layer.
