Photoshop tutorial: effect folded sheet

Friday, March 7, 2008

image Adobe Photoshop is a powerful tool and allows you to make the effect really appealing. To achieve the effect of bending of a sheet of paper, that we can use the transform tool to "bend" - really - a layer. With a few precautions can make the effect very realistic. The images presented below in this tutorial are by way of example and were carried out in low resolution. To enhance the effect of using a high resolution, so as to resize the image to the end and get an anti-aliasing on the edges.

STEP 1

Create a new document and add a layer, our paper - I did a red box:

image

STEP 2

Press Ctrl-T to activate Free Transform. Click button image or, from the Edit menu, choose Transform / Warp.

imageimage

Then click on one corner and drag it to the center:

imageimage

This is the base. However, the effect is only partial. We can improve it by adding some detail.

STEP 3

We make our paper more complete. Draw something inside, even a simple edge, always on the same layer and repeat step 2.

imageimage

As you can see only the edge is not affected but the whole figure of the layer. Also, if you try to overdo it, im dragging mouse during the alteration to the center of the sheet:

imageimage

you can actually glimpse the "back" of our layer. In reality, the layer is not treated as a three-dimensional. In fact there is no "back" of our page. Photoshop "copy" the front making it appear as "retro". We can exploit this property to our advantage. Therefore apply a gradient on the edge that we want to fold, only a portion of it and try a shade from black to transparent:

imageimage

We have already improved the situation!

STEP 4

We can improve the outcome yet. We use this time a gradient from black to white, be sure to opacity to 50%:

image

imageimage

Unìinteressante variant, during the alteration, is to use a portion of the layer, as we did for the gradient, and act on the distorting controls:

imageimage

Getting the first or second image, depending on how altered:

imageimage

In the second image I have reversed the gradient. This, in fact, decide the origin of "light" and therefore the real 3D.

STEP 5

The bending can be made even softer by acting on the edge of alteration, adding a camber more realistic

imageimage

The addition of a small shadow, then, makes it more realistic. To add a shadow with the magic wand select the folded corner. Add a new layer and fill it with black, applying a gradient filter.

imageimage

Now back on the sheet layer, reselect the corner with the magic wand, select the new layer you just created that contains our shadow and press Ctrl + Alt + I to invert the selection:

imageimage

Click Add Layer Mask image . Triggering:

imageimage

Click to move the shadow chain image between the layers and the shadow mask. Select the layer of the left, the shadow, and move it. Also applied an opacity of 50%.

@ Simon: I could not send mail, I returned error, so I answer here. The command is available from the alter in Photoshop CS2.
In version CS3 you have to do it this way:

    1) Select the layer you want to "bend" or alter

    2) From the Edit Menu (Edit if English) go on "Transform", which contains a submenu, where you'll find the "Altera"

When you select a portion of a layer and "transformation" - for example stairs - on the toolbar at the top you can also find the icon to switch to alteration.

the back is not the copy of the front, but it is transparent.

Photoshop CS4 also with the effect does not change. Perhaps the problem lies in how you created the form you're folding. This must be on a single layer. The operation of "folding", in fact, acting on a single layer. Try to merge the layers into one layer and work. I think the problem is that ...
