Adobe Apollo Alpha Release

Adobe has finally released the alpha version of Apollo . We are still far from the final version, but you can check out some of its features with the demo applications (. air) proposals online. The installation ( Apollo runtime ) of this Alpha weighs about 6Mb - for Windows. The Demo (Apollo sample applications) do not weigh even 600Kb. After installing the Apollo runtime will seem nothing changed on your PC (not added any links on the desktop or taskbar), even though you have installed - in fact - the new browser from Adobe! See Web2.0: Adobe is trying to Apollo?

The sample applications have their own installer, which incorporates the traditional setup programs for Windows, allowing you to add the application to both the Apollo desktop to the start menu.

Start the installation in the traditional style of the Windows installer
Request to add to the Start Menu or Desktop - If you check the two choices the application will be accessible only by computer resources (C: \ Documents and Settings \ ... \ Program Files \ Adobe \)

I installed all the demo applications offered by Adobe. Let's say that the Alpha version is heard, especially on Fresh , an RSS reader. I could not, in fact, to add a new feed because the keyboard is mapped in English but the shift key does not work properly in practice have not been able to place a colon (:)! Even copying and pasting was - mysteriously - disabled. After all we are in Alpha, demand what you want ... shame because the application seems to work very well.

Fresh, a very nice RSS Reader

Can not insert a new address! I also tried to import other feeds (OPML) file but the window of choice is nailed hard on D!

Apart from these problems with Fresh , other interesting applications, such as Scouts , a sort of Debugger HTML / JavaScript / CSS / DOM / ... very simple, but interesting. Scout demonstrates the capabilities of Apollo to load an HTML page. I must say I was surprised by the HTML rendering undolog.com. Try and you will find the excellent interpretation of the code, including JavaScript!

The only obvious flaw I noticed was the rendering of animated GIFs feedburner.

The strong point and - remarkable - are interesting demos Pixel Perfect and ScreenPlay , respectively, demonstrating the capabilities of windowless (or chrome window) in the transparency and overlay to the desktop. ScreenPlay , in particular, allows you to draw directly on your desktop PC!

Adobe is therefore launching its challenge to Rich Internet Applications. Apollo is placed in a sort of limbo is not a browser but performs many of its applications. Alpha Overall this is interesting, it remains to see how the developer community will respond to this approach very different from Ajax and DHTML.
